George was born on December 28, 1863 and named George Henry
Ryon. This is a year earlier than most records show, but this
is
the date listed on the certified record of birth from the British
General Records Office. In the birth indexes, he is listed as George
Henry Ryon Bateman, but it appears as though Ryon was intended to be
his surname, not Bateman. See the birth
certificate. The histories conflict and there
is confusion about George's mother, but careful research shows
that she
was almost certainly Mary Bateman, born 20 May 1839, the daughter
of Caroline Bateman and an unknown father. George probably never
knew his mother Mary. Read more about her on the Bateman Ancestors page.
Family picture. Florence is
probably the girl in the back on the far right.
Possibly the Jeffs on their farm. [3] The
woman on the
far right looks a lot
like Annie and the number of children matches, as well as the fact that
there
is a log cabin and a new house. The women in the center
holding
babies
would be the two oldest daughters.
