Important Events

John Henry Peterson, son of John H Peterson and Mary Jane Skinner was born 29 Oct 1880 at Ovid Bear Lake Co Idaho. My mother died the 19th of March 1886 of Milk fever, 12 day after giving birth to a baby girl. I was four years old. My father's sister Kerstine Peterson took care of my brother Alma and myself for a year after Mother's death and Grand Mother Skinner took my sister Jane 2 week old and raised her to maturity. When I was five years old father took I and my brother Alma home. He batched [bachelored?] it part of the time and had a haus keeper part of the time until Aug 1890 father married his second wife Elen Elm. I grew to manhood at Ovid Bear Lake Co Idaho and attended district shool at Ovid. It was a one room school with one teacher for all of the classes. when ever there was any extra work to do I had to stay out of school to work. I also went to the Fielding Academy part of one winter at Paris Idaho. I also attended school at the LDS University at Salt Lake City for one winter. I was active as a deacon. We deacons took care of the church seeing that it was cleaned and warm for church and other gatherings. We also sawed and split wood for the church and widows in the ward. when I was 19 years old I was called to take a missanary cours at the Brigham Young College at Logan Utah. I ran out of money before the course was completed, So I and another Lad by the name of Thornick took the train from Logan to Franklin and walked across the mountains to Bear Lake on the snow in the month of March. I had not been home but a short time when Father told me to get out and go for myself, so I walked to Montpelier and bumed [bummed] my way to Pocatello on a freight train. I got a job at Pocatello to go to Twin fall [Falls] and drive a team on a fresno [a Fresno scraper] building a grade. I work a short time when it started to rain so we could not work and small Pox brock [broke] out in camp. And I quit my job and beat my way back to Pocatello and walked from Pocatello to Goshen Bingham Co Idaho where I went to work for a farmer by the name of John Lundell. I worked for him seven months for $25.00 per month. Then I worke for Christiansen Bros on a canal at Idaho Fall, for a short time, and winter set in, so got a job from a sheep man, a Mr York for $10.00 per month. Then I ran onto a Mr Hunt who wanted a man to move camp on the desert. So I quit Mr York and went to wash for Mr Hunt for $20.00 per month for the winter. In the spring Hunt offered me $35.00 per month to herd sheep so I herded sheep for some time. In the fall of 1901 I went to Chicago with Mr Hunt when he shiped [shipped] his lambs. I also went to St Joseph Mo [Missouri] with Mr Hunts Brother John Hunt. a couple of year later, I worked for the Smart + Webster sheep Co at Rexburg and Spring during lambing. I also helped Eli Simmons winter lamb and one winter and I worke and his ranch one summer. In the fall of 1906 I went to work for Lee S Robertson where I work for over a year. It was while working at the Robison Ranch that I met Florence Mary Jeff whom I was married to Mar 27 1907 at Ucon Idaho. To this union was born six boys and three girls namely Spencer Henry, George Floyd, Florence Sylvia, Rozella Mae, Lee Sylvester, Von Leroy, Golden Virgil, Genevieve, Harvey Lavon they all grew to maturity except Genevieve who died at five month old of leakage of the heart. I bought 40 acre of land at Garfield Idaho from Clarence Sturt where we moved to in 1908. I farmed my forty and worked it until 1910 when I moved to Hibbard Idaho to work on Mr Hunts ranch where we lived until 1912 when we move back to Garfield and farmed for my self. I rented 80 acres from Ralph Edmunds for 4 years. Then I homesteaded 160 acres in Fall Creek Basin where we lived in the summer milk cows and taking care of range stock until ab [about] 1920. When I sold our homestead to Jess Croft for $800.00. Then I leased the Ralph Edmonds place for four more years. Then I rented 160 from Dade Godfrey at Garfield for a number of year. I was water master on the Harrison Canal for six years. I served on the school board in Dis no [district number] 48 Garfield Idaho from 1921 to 1934, 13 years. In the spring of 1934 Spence Floyd and I leased 400 acre of land at Terreton Idaho from Mr F A Sweet. In 1936 I purchased 160 acres from Mrs F A Sweet after the death of Mr Sweet shere I lived until 1937 when I becam an invalid when we sold our farm to Mrs Mary for $14,000. I have held the following positions in the LDS Church Ward teacher, Church history, and Gospel Doctine teacher in Sunday School, Geneological teach, Counselor in Mutual, President of Mutual, counselor in Sunday Scholl, Member Geneological commitee, Chairman geneoligical commitee, Teacher of High Priests, Group leader of High Priests, Done some research and Temple work for the dead.

The author is John Henry Peterson, written in his own hand (I believe).  Some names may not be correct since they were very difficult to read. This information came from a "Personal Record" geneology sheet. Contrast this with a typewritten version of the same sheet, labeled as "Version 2".
