J. H. Peterson Dies In Rigby

RIGBY, Aug. 24--John Henry Peterson, 78, retired farmer and civic and church  leader in Terreton and Garfield, died Tuesday afternoon at a local rest home.

He was born Oct, 29, 1881, at Ovid, the son of John H. and Mary Jane Skinner Peterson.  He married Florence Mary Jeffs at Ucon March 27, 1907.  The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.

Active in church and community affairs, he was a high priest in the LDS Church; former MIA president and Sunday School teacher and high priest teacher.  He also served as president and watermaster of the Harrison canal and as trustee of the Garfield school for 13 years.

Besides his widow, he is survived by seven sons and daughters:

Spencer H. Peterson, Wendell; Mrs. John F. (Sylvia) Rasmussen, Idaho Falls; Mrs. Zay (Rosetta) Crystal, Rupert; Lee S. Peterson, Jerome; Von L., St. Anthony; Golden V., LaBelle; Harvey L., Rigby; brothers and sisters, Alma Peterson, Iona; Mrs. Jane Miles, Blackfoot; half brothers and sisters, May Nelson, Pearl Johnson and Irene Beck, all of Ovid; LeRoy Peterson, Ogden, Utah; 43 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Rigby 3rd Ward Chapel with Bishop Fred V. Porter officiating.  Burial will be in the Ucon Cemetery under direction of the Eckersell Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m at the funeral home.
