Von, Sherie, and Janice at
Floyd's house in Mud Lake,
Idaho.
Christmas: Linda,
Sherie, and part of
Janice.
Behind Linda's right was a wonderful play cupboard her Dad had
made.
The paint was not dry by Christmas Eve so he built up the fire in the
shop
and the stove exploded sending soot everywhere. The second
coat
of
paint to cover the soot was not quite dry when Santa came.
This
was
Uncle Floyd's 2-room house and Linda thinks the girl at the right is
Floyd's
adopted daughter Lynn, instead of Janice.
Von and the four little girls' favorite activity. Sherie's
favorite
was "Mary Had a Little Lamb." "Stars are the Windows of
Heaven"
was
Linda and Janice's favorite.
1950, Christmas:
Linda, Sherie, and
Janice.
We went to the hills 30 miles West of Mud Lake to cut our
tree.
The
fuel pump wouldn't work as we tried to leave for home. With
the
help
of prayer and Von's ingenuity he was able to use a butter carton to get
us on our way home. [Von said the butter carton was folded
and
placed
between the fuel pump push rod and the pump piston so it would
work.]
Linda's comments: Von made the play stove that year (it's to
the
left of Linda in the photo). At the very front, just left of
center,
is a large metal top that had handle that you could pump to make it
spin.
The sleigh standing up behind the stove had bells on it and that year
they
brought it home in the back of the car on Christmas Eve. The
girls
kept asking what the bells were that they could hear and their parents
said that it was Santa behind them and they'd better get home
quickly.
The place is their 2-room house by the Chase's house, which was
originally
a chicken coop. One advantage that this house had over the
previous
one was that it had a small closet for the chamber pot! David
and
Gregory Chase were Linda and Janice's ages and they played together
many
times.

1952: Easter
Sunday in St. Anthony,
Idaho.
Lind was in first grade. We moved to St. Anthony in
September,
1951
and bought a home from Melvin Lords in June 1952.
1953?: Linda, Ed,
Janice, and Sherie.
Grandpa Matson came to visit occasionally. Here he helped to
put
up a tent for the children to play in. He also made them
whistles
out of willows and hats out of newspapers to make a parade.
1954: Beth and
Sherie. (The
photo was developed in January 1955 so this must be summer of 1954.)
1954, Christmas:
Christmas in St. Anthony, Idaho. We had purchased a 4 room
house
-- the rooms were tiny but we were happy even though Linda was
sick-in-bed
for 7 months with rheumatic fever. From Linda: The
nativity
to the right of the tree was a 3-dimensional paper set and the cradles
were made out of oatmeal containers. The tractor was an extra
from
a friend of the family and Linda wanted it instead of a doll (although
what she really wanted was a train set).
1955, January:
Sherie, Beth, and Janice are standing with their Dad but Linda was not
well yet so she was in the car. The drifts were so high that
they
had to bring in a rotary snow plow to open the roads.
