Joel Ricks Jr. (1858-1944)

Note: Father tried numerous time to establish himself in Logan where they had a home and where schooling was not interrupted. It was not a business community, but he could always go to the railroad to get work, so most of his years were spent on the railroad. My family thought it would be helpful to list the moves since there were so many. --Irene Ricks Bastow

1876 Mission Call

1878 Railroad, possibly Oxford, Idaho

1879 Railroad, Franklin, Idaho -- lived with Hatch family

1880 Railroad, Eagle Rock, Idaho (later known as Idaho Falls)

1881 Married, 13 January -- went to Eagle Rock to live

1882 Logan, Utah, -- birth of Rhea, March 4 -- elected Selectman for Cache County, unexpired term of Charles O. Card

1883 Logan, Utah -- birth of Joel, 30 September

1885 Railroad, Salt Lake City -- Rhea in kindergarten at U of U (Campus west of Temple block)

1887 Provo

1888 Railroad, Springville, Utah -- Susette (Zettie) born 1 April

Grandfather Ricks died 15 December -- Book of Mormon classes started

1890 Railroad, Springville -- Reda born 15 March

1892 Logan -- Lewis born 8 May, Ricks Produce started with Brother Crandall.

(1891 Statehood movement reached Logan --1893 trip to Arizona with Bro. Baker in interest of archaeology -- Political activities through these years.)

1894 Logan -- Phebe born 17 January

1895 Railroad, Salina, Utah -- Irene born 19 November -- Constitutional Convention of Utah in session -- 7th and final try for Statehood -- Father represented Sevier county

1896 Railroad, Richfield, Utah --Right-of-Way Agent for the line to Marysville

1897 Letter regarding genealogy and family reunion to Hyrum Ricks reminding him, Nathan and himself of their duty to Grandfather to do that work assigned to them.

1898 Joel, his son, died in Logan on 19 January. Family there because of his poor health.

Castle Gate -- Station Master & Telegrapher -- In Bishopric for three years

1899 Paul born in Logan 1 April -- Mother spent her time in both places.

1900 Started the Ogden Knitting Factory (I found a letterhead) -- Served on Weber Stake Sunday School Board for two years. Zettie kept house and helped in the store.

1902 Logan -- Carrie born 4 March. I was in Ogden with Zettie and Father at the time.

1903 First trip to South America

1904 Owned Logan Republican Newspaper this year. Sold to Fred Turner.

1906 Deputy Treasurer of Cache County in Logan.

1907 Built two cottages for rental on the back of our lot at 193 East and 2nd South in Logan. They faced on 2nd East. Added four rooms to our home, two bedrooms and a parlor and library downstairs.

1908 Second trip to South America with Joseph Tarbet, September 12.

1909 Third trip to South America, February 24, with Brother Cluff, on business (a land deal.)

Dad went back to the railroad at Bingham Canyon. Phebe kept house the first summer.

At Bingham Canyon for three years.

1913 Bought the nursery property in River Heights. Deed dated 30 October 1913. Returned home to retire. Built a small home on the property.

1917 World War I -- went back to the railroad for the duration at Salt Lake City Freight Depot as cashier.

1919 Mother died 2 January. In October, Father married Mary Jane S. Williams, a widow with four children.

1920 Came back to River Heights to farm and write.

1925 3 November -- six months mission to North Carolina

1926 Started a series of articles in the Logan Journal from Nov to May 1927 on the Book of Mormon

1927 The Pioneer Series followed in the Logan Journal

1935 Molly, his wife, went to California to visit her children. They had grown and gone their own ways. She did not return. In the fall, Dad went to Virginia to do genealogy gathering and Marriage Bonds.

1936 Finished in Virginia on 28 December at the age of 78.

1937 Spent two months at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. reading books on Archaeology and early voyages to this hemisphere before Columbus. Back in Logan, hired Ferris Christensen to manage his farm for one year on shares. 22 April, divorce granted.

1938 21 July -- 80 years of age -- letter from Judge Ricks -- family gather at Phebe's in Logan

1939 In March visited Lewis in California with Irene --did some work in the library in Los Angeles -- lived in Long Beach

1940 Sold home to Phebe and Karl Wood -- later sold land and garden plot

1941 7 December -- with Irene when first heard news of Pearl Harbor Attack

1942 Went to Long Beach -- needed to be with me for care

1943 Trip to Virginia -- health poor and was urged to return home -- hard time traveling because of the war

1944 23 November -- died in Logan with Phebe
