Map
of Matlock Cliff in 1884 on the British History Online website.
This is where Benjamin and his family lived, as reported on the
1841 and 1851 censuses. Tansley Mill is on the upper right,
where Benjamin probably worked.
Modern
map of the Matlock Cliff area on Google Maps. Benjamin
probably lived on the Alfreton Road (A615) about half way between
Matlock and Tansley. The cotton mills were on Old Coach Road, about
one-half mile to the east.
An article about the Tansley
Cotton Mills includes a photo of the Tansley Mill. An
article about Thomas
Hackett, owner of the Tansley Mill, mentions that he was very
active in the Wesleyan Methodist church, as was Benjamin.
Census:
7 Jun 1841; Cliffe, Matlock, Derbyshire, England
[Benjamin's mother is living with him. William is not there,
but appears to be living with Thomas Ludlam as a farm laborer (shown on
the census further down the page). Read an explanation of
the 1841 census here.]
